Move-in report: the small defects that get expensive later

When you move in you get one chance to record everything. Use it – with these tips.

The move-in report is your most important document for moving out. Anything in it can't be blamed on you later. Anything missing can.

In daylight and an empty flat

Arrange the handover during the day and before the furniture arrives. Only then will you see scratches in the parquet, marks on the walls or loose sockets.

Every detail counts

Don't be shy about details: a chip in the bathtub, a crack in the basin, a notch in the door frame. Better too much than too little.

Dated photos

Photograph every defect and email the pictures to the property manager the same day. That gives you dated evidence.

Test everything

Hot water, hob, oven, flush, extractor, windows, blinds. Anything that doesn't work goes in the report.

Two copies, two signatures

Both parties sign the report and each keeps a copy. If you can't be there in person, give a trusted person written authority.

Found something later?
