Shared flats: rules, insurance and the deposit question

Living together saves money and nerves – once a few things are settled.

A shared flat is more than shared rent. To keep it harmonious, settle a few things at the start.

Set rules

Cleaning rota, shopping, visitors, noise: the clearer the agreements, the fewer the arguments. A kitty for shared expenses helps.

The right insurance

Liability insurance is a must – some property managers require it. Household insurance can be per person or for the whole flat. Clarify what's shared property.

The deposit

If everyone's on the lease, everyone is jointly liable – including for the deposit. With a Swisscautionen24 certificate nobody has to put up three months' rent; you share the premium. If someone is under 26 the youth discount applies to the whole lease. If a flatmate changes, report it and we issue a new certificate.

Finding the right flatmate

Think about who you're looking for and put it in the ad: rent, room size, lease length, photos, who you are. Meet the favourites together – gut feeling counts.
